Your Advertisement

My add is for Tacori wedding rings. It is an image of a large gold key with three large rings hanging off of it. The magazine I got it from was Women's Health. The target audience is women. I do believe the design was to target women because the rings are very large on the page to catch the eye of the women reading the magazine. Also the detail and color are very clear and bright.

Elements of an Effective Layout

The main points in this article are that the advertiser needs to have balance, proportion, movement, utility, clarity and emphasis in an ad to make it effective. I believe the emphasis and anything visual would be the most important because the audience needs to me attracted to the ad and then understand what the ad is about.

Democracy of Goods

The main point of this article was try and promote the idea of democracy of goods. Democracy of goods is when the advertiser is trying to show their product in a way that anyone can benefit from it. It is still used in advertisment today when advertisers try to promote thir product in a way that shows anyone can use it.

Advertising

An ad I find effective is the E-Trade commercials. It shows a baby that can talk like adults, and states how easy it is to use E-Trade. I believe it is effective because it uses humor to get the audiences attention and the point is that it is easy enough a baby can use it.

An ad I find ineffective is the Popeye's chicken commercials. All they do is talk about how bad the "other guys" are and doesn't talk about their product until the end. I think it is ineffective because I want to hear about their product and not how they can bad mouth other products.

Persuasive Essay Summary

My thesis statement is, adopting a pet is better than buying one from a pet store. My arguments are that it is better for the dog and other dogs to come. Buying a dog doesn't mean that it will be a better dog than one at a shelter. It ends up being cheaper to adopt than to buy. You can pick from a wider variety at a shelter than at a pet store.

Style

One of the helpful tips I noticed is number 13, make sure the reader knows who is speaking. It does seem that it would be one of the main focuses but I would admit I dont normaily focus on that. It seems like it would come natural to my writing but when I think about it I dont think I make it very clear. I would have to disagree with number 11, do not explain too much. My idea is that I would rather my reader read something that they already know or understand rather than getting lost becasue I assumed they would understand.

Effective Argument

After reading Letter from Birmingham Dr. King is addressing a form of government, who has addressed his civil rights movement demonstrations. The tone he is using seems to be a stern and almost angry. All of this combined is effective but what I thought was most effective was that fact that he starts off the letter by stating that he normally doesn’t respond to these types of complaints. So to me this makes a statement that they have obviously said something that Dr. King felt like he needed to address. I think I could use a lot of different examples from Dr. King's letter. He is one of the most influential speakers so anything I could take away from his letter can be useful.

Logical Fallacies

Either-or - Either the United States creates more jobs or the unemployment rate will increase.

Oversimplification - Everyone would get a college education if tuition was free.

Rationalization - I wouldn't have been late for class if my alarm went off on time.

When Your Opinion Matters

When I was at practice a few years ago we were told our practice was to run for 40 minutes. So me and my team ran the whole 40 minutes and our coach wasn't there to tell us to stop. Some thought we should just keep running and others thought we could stop. I argued that we could stop because our 40 minutes were up we did what we were supposed to so we could stop. Everyone listened to me and we stopped. Worse opinion ever, we ended up getting in trouble for stopping. Looking back I realize we would have just been safer of we kept going.

Muddiest Point

The muddiest point for me would be why we can’t argue a position. The example given was don’t argue abortion, death penalty etc. Is this just not allowed for this paper or does this apply to all persuasive papers?

I believe the easiest point for me would be that my topic has many choices, but not sure if my topic is correct for this paper.

Mechanics

When it comes to the principles of writing I believe choosing a design and holding onto it is my strongest feature. This is because when I create my outline I usually stick to the pattern because I have already put my thought in order. My weakest point would be omitting useless words, I think I do this because I try to make my point clear to readers and end up making it confusing by adding extra words that I think will help. A way I can fix this is just by looking at my draft and seeing which woulds I can take out and it still make sense.

Blog Post #4

In college I have encountered all kinds of pressures. I have had economic pressures of increased tuition which put pressure on my bank account. I have peer pressures by being encouraged to go out and party instead of doing homework or studying for the test or quiz I have tomorrow. Also parental pressures  have been a factor as well but the pressure from my parents is good for me because they give me an incentive to do well. Along with school I work part time so this leaves less time to study on the days I work long hours. I deal with these kinds of pressures by planning ahead and time management.

Blog Post #3

The class that was very difficult for me was CALCULUS! All I wanted out of the class was a C so I could at least just pass. I actually enjoyed my teacher but calculus was just one of those classes that I just couldn't grasp. I could not relate the class to anything in "real life" so I didn't understand when I would ever use this knowledge again. Which in turn I didnt pay much attention and could not understand the concepts. I did end up getting a C and passing the class.

Blog Post #2

I believe that keeping a notebook is a personal thing, but now a days these notebooks have turned into Internet blogs that are not very personal. Blogs/notebooks can be about keeping in touch, both with yourself and others. It can be about keeping in touch with others by posting a blog and asking for comments or concerns, but can be personal if keeping a notebook or blog is how you express yourself. I do not keep a notebook and this is my very first true blog page. I do have the social network sites, facebook and twitter which could be considered a blog because you post statuses and information about yourself on a  web page. These personal blogs and social networks have drastically changed the world today. For example this online class could not have existed in the 1960's. Also has increased the speed that news travels and communication between people.
